Workplace: Department of Botany and Zoology, Faculty of Science, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic

Type of Contract: temporary position with 2-year contract, non-academic

Working Hours: 1,0 FTE (full-time employment of 40 hours per week)

Department of Botany and Zoology is a modern centre of research and teaching in the fields of evolutionary biology, biosystematics and ecology. Its individual research groups study phylogenetic relationships and the classification of organisms, their diversity from the local to the continental level, and the ecological relationships of individual species, populations and communities in relation to both natural and human-induced changes in entire ecosystems.

Job Description

Work in the Vegetation Science Group with Professor Milan Chytrý and colleagues on the Biodiversa-funded international project FeedBaCks. This project is led by the Swiss Federal Research Institute (WSL) that aims at understanding the feedback of biodiversity on climate and nature’s contributions to people. The aim of the workpackage led by the Brno team is modelling diversity patterns of plant functional groups across Europe based on the vegetation-plot data from the European Vegetation Archive (EVA) and relating them to climatic models.

Key Duties

  • Statistical analyses of large databases of European vegetation plots
  • Linking vegetation-plot data with plant traits and plant ecological characteristics
  • Modelling vegetation diversity across Europe
  • Close cooperation with other FeedBaCk team members at Masaryk University
  • Cooperation with international partners within FeedBaCks and European Vegetation Archive
  • Writing scientific publications for international journals
  • Presentations at international conferences

  • požadované jazykové znalosti
    ENGLISH: Excellent

zkušenosti/kvalifikace

  • PhD in plant ecology, landscape ecology, botany, biogeography or related fields relevant to biodiversity research (finished not more than eight years ago)
  • Experience in vegetation analyses, GIS and statistical modelling
  • Experience with European flora or vegetation (in any region of Europe)
  • International experience (PhD from other institution than Masaryk University or a previous work contract for at least two years outside the Czech Republic for an MU graduate)
  • Fluency in spoken and written English demonstrated by previous international publications and conference presentations or internships
  • Good communication skills, motivation for teamwork
  • Flexible and independent way of organizing work with a clear focus on science
