Our laboratory is responsible for the national surveillance of Streptococcus pneumoniae causing invasive disease in Belgium. This surveillance is of utmost importance to guide the national vaccination strategy. To improve our understanding of the evolving epidemiology of pneumococcal disease, whole genome sequencing (WGS) of pneumococcal strains was recently set up. We plan to further optimise this technique for strain characterisation. We aim to explore difference between strains isolated during different time periods, from different sites and make teh comparsion with strains isolated in other countries. We further aim to explore the added value of WGS to the conventional diagnostic techniques we use.
