Offer Description
Join a team with an extensive national and international network in metal additive manufacturing! This PhD position at Chalmers University of Technology is a unique opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge while contributing to a more sustainable future through tomorrow’s manufacturing technologies.
Information about the department
The main competences at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science are found in the areas of:
- Human-Technology Interaction
- Form and Function
- Modeling and Simulation
- Product Development
- Material
- Production and in the interaction between these areas.
The research focuses on the development of the industrial process, from need to finished product while creating added value. To combine skills throughout the whole chain distinguishes the department both nationally and internationally. Here we gather internationally prominent researchers, in dynamic and outstanding research environments, as well as in national and international research networks.
Information about the research
The national competence centre CAM2 (Centre for Additive Manufacturing – Metal) offers a unique platform for collaboration between academia and industry. The centre focuses on material development for powder-based metal additive manufacturing (AM), covering the full value chain—from powder production and AM process development to post-processing and final components.
Hosted by the Division of Materials and Manufacture at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science, CAM2 conducts advanced research in powder-based metal AM, including powder technology, surface engineering, graphene and other 2D materials, coatings, nanomaterials, and metal machining. A key focus is improving the sustainability of AM by studying powder degradation and enhancing powder reuse and recycling.
We are now seeking a PhD student with interest in powder-based metal AM technologies such as Powder Bed Fusion (Laser and Electron Beam), Binder Jetting, and Directed Energy Deposition. The project will focus on powder characteristics, reuse, recycling, and overall sustainability across various materials and applications.
Our AM group is one of the largest in Europe, bringing together dedicated researchers, postdocs, and PhD students in a collaborative environment to push the frontiers of metal AM.
This PhD position is linked to CAM2, which has developed 15 novel AM materials in close cooperation with more than 30 industrial partners over the past five years.
Major responsibilities
- Your major responsibility as a PhD student is to perform your own research as part of the research group in CAM2 Centre at Chalmers.
- The position also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level as well as supervising master students to a certain extent.
- Another important aspect involves collaboration with academia and industry.
- The position offers great opportunities for future research duties within academia as well as industry or the public sector.
Qualifications
The following requirements are mandatory:
- To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a MSc degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits by an internationally recognized university in materials science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, physics or production engineering.
- You will need strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Applicants are expected to demonstrate good potential within research including project management and education.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
- Experience and good knowledge of metal AM, metallic materials and inorganic chemistry are considered as advantages.
- An interest and curiosity in the subject as well as good analytical skills are desirable.
- Skills in CAD, powder-bed fusion technology, materials characterisation, microscopy, etc., are considered as merits.
Contract terms
- Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of 4,5 years.
- The PhD positions are fully funded from start.
- A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
- Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
