Offer Description
The BATT-AI project aims to develop advanced methodologies based on artificial intelligence (AI) for optimising the integration of large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) into smart grids to enhance grid stability and facilitate optimal use of connection capacity.
The goal of this PhD position is to contribute to the design of models and mechanisms that enable risk-aware optimisation of grid capacity and facilitate market participation for large-scale ESS, providing solutions for dynamic capacity allocation.
Your key responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
- Develop AI-based optimisation models for capacity connection;
- Design a capacity connection market mechanism;
- Develop AI models for network operations.
This project is a joint effort between the University of Twente and TU Delft. You will be co-supervised by Associate Prof. Pedro P. Vergara from TU Delft and collaborate with PhD and postdoctoral researchers whose work focuses on optimal electricity market participation and grid stability /synthetic inertia from BESS, respectively.
You are expected to take a leadership role in research integration and coordination within the project and contribute to joint publications, system modelling, and stakeholder engagement. The project is strongly supported by industry, with collaboration from: Alfen – BESS developer, Stedin – grid operator, Eneco – energy supplier, ENTRNCE – electricity market expertise provider, Kyos – developer of market optimization tools.
This position offers a unique opportunity to conduct high-impact research at the interface of power systems, converter control, battery degradation, and market economics, with direct pathways to real-world application and policy influence.
Where to apply

- You have, or will shortly, acquire a master's degree in the field of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Science or a related field.
- Experience in modelling, simulation and analysis of power systems and BESS (dynamic and steady-state) is desired.
- Experience in mathematical modelling, optimisation, and AI/ML techniques is a plus.
- You have a creative mindset and excellent problem-solving, analytical and communication skills.
- You have a good team spirit and like to work in an interdisciplinary and internationally oriented environment.
- You are proficient in English.
Additional Information
- A full-time position for four years, with a qualifier in the first year, and the flexibility to work (partially) from home.
