Offer Description
We are looking for a postdoc to join our team at the Division of Engineering Materials at Chalmers University of Technology.
The research will focus on the use of magnetic fields to control the orientation of various types of nanoparticles within both thermoset and thermoplastic polymer matrices. This position entails close collaboration with industrial partners to implement the alignment technique and design nanostructures tailored for aerospace applications.
About us
The Division of Engineering Materials explores the relationship between technologically important materials and their properties. Within the division, the Kádár Group conducts research in the broader field of rheology and processing of soft matter. Our ongoing projects center around three main areas:
- Field–matter interactions for material structuring – We investigate nanostructured soft materials using graphene and other high aspect ratio fillers to enhance antibacterial, electrical, thermal, mechanical, gas-barrier, and hierarchical properties.
- Advanced characterization methods and development of new techniques – We specialize in hyphenated rheological methods such as rheo-SAXS and rheo-DES, which are primarily applied to materials like nanocellulose and graphene suspensions, polymer nanocomposites, hydrogels, adhesives, and various biomaterials (e.g. biofilms, tissues).
- Dynamics of complex fluids – Our work examines thixotropic yield stress fluids, flow-induced pattern formation in both simple and complex flows (e.g. flow instabilities, product defects), multiscale analysis, and the application of machine learning techniques.
About the research project
We have recently developed a novel orientation method using a Halbach array, capable of producing uniformly aligned nanostructures with arbitrary orientation (Ghai et al., Advanced Functional Materials, 2024, 34, 2406875). This project will further develop this technique with a focus on aerospace applications such as lightning protection, de-icing, and sensing.
This position is part of the 2D-TECH (2D materials technology for industrial applications) Vinnova Competence Center at Chalmers. The role also includes teaching responsibilities, comprising approximately 15% of full-time employment.
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
- To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree, preferably in mechanical, materials or chemical engineering with a focus on nanomaterials and or nanocomposites, awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline*.
- You will need strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- A mechanical engineering background with a focus on materials or a materials engineering background or similar, would be preferred.
- Other backgrounds and competences would be also considered if well justified in the application letter.
You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.
*The date on your doctoral degree certificate is considered the official date of completion. Exceptions to the three-year eligibility limit may be made for documented circumstances such as parental leave, sick leave, or military service.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
- Experience with workoing on 2D materials and related technologies, polymeric materials and related technologies.
What you will do
- Conduct independent research in collaboration with the research group
- Publish and present your work at conferences and in journals
- Supervise master’s and/or PhD students to a certain extent
- Possibility to engage in teaching at undergraduate/master’s level
- Collaborate within academia and with society at large
The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.
Contract terms
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension.
The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.
