As a doctoral student, you will work in an interdisciplinary team to produce synthetic and natural hydrogels for biomedical applications and examine them physically and chemically in order to establish a correlation between the chemical structure of the materials and their biophysical properties. Raman spectroscopy methods, such as confocal or surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, will be used for high-resolution chemical characterization of the biomaterials, supplemented by complementary microscopy techniques and mechanical characterization methods such as rheology or atomic force microscopy. 
 

Job Duties:

• High-resolution chemical characterization of biological tissue, such as cerebral arteries or human cell cultures, using Raman microscopy.
• Physicochemical characterization of hydrogel-based biomaterials using Raman microscopy in combination with rheology and/or atomic force microscopy.
• Contributing to the implementation of Raman spectroscopy for the investigation of biological materials or biomaterials, e.g., by setting up a rheo-Raman system or establishing new Raman spectroscopy techniques.
• Participation in collaborative research projects within the department and with external partners, including the independent performance of measurements for the institute as well as for other institutes, both within and outside JKU.
• Participation in national and international conferences to present research findings and collaborate with experts.
• Publication of research findings in international scientific journals and presentation at international conferences.
• Contributing to organizational tasks in the laboratory, particularly assisting in ensuring the proper functioning of the scientific and technical equipment used for Raman spectroscopy.
• Contributing to the education and training of Bachelor’s and Master’s students, e.g., by teaching laboratory courses or tutorials.

Your Qualifications:

• Completed university degree (Diploma/Master’s) in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or Materials Science.
• Interest in working in interdisciplinary and international teams.
• Knowledge of the preparation of organic and inorganic materials, as well as practical experience in chemical laboratory work.
• Knowledge of methods for the chemical and/or mechanical characterization of synthetic and biological macromolecular materials is desirable.
• Practical experience in Raman spectroscopy is highly advantageous.
• Initial experience in supervising chemistry laboratory courses is desirable.
• Good command of German and English (B2 level).
